The book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser talks about different effects fast food has on the US as a nation. This book starts off by talking about different people examining the roles of the fast food industry in South Carolina. It talks about how the fast food industry has changed dramatically over the past couple of years. Schlosser talks about why the meat in fast food restaurants is so unhealthy too consume; it can cause much harm too your body and people don't take that into consideration. In 1997 approximately 35 million pounds of ground beef was recalled by Hudson Foods because a strain of E Coli was found in the food. However, by the time the beef was recalled, 25 million pounds had already been eaten.
This is the meat that we eat at fast food restaurants everyday. Schlosser says, "E. cols 0157:7 has recieved a good deal of public attention. Over the past two decades scientists have discovered more than a dozen other new foodborn pathogens, including Campylobecter, jeuni, cryptosporidium, parvum, cyclospora cayetanensis, listirmonocytogenes, and norwalk-like viruses. The CDC estimates that more than three quarters of the food-related illnesses and deaths in the United States are caused by infectious agents that have not yet been identified(Schlosser196)." Schlosser is proving a point throughout this by addressing that E Coli is in many of the meats in fast food industries which is killing many americans everyday. This is one of the many examples that Schlosser has to tell us about in his book,Fast Food Nation.
I have different opinions on this book.I think that what Scholosser did was a good thing, and he made me realize how bad fast food really is for me. I usually eat fast food alot during the weeks but after reading this book it changed my view on fast food and how much I will consume it. I never knew how bad it would affect our bodies by just eating one hamburger from Burger King, and I didn't realize that one simple thing like that could kill you. Im glad he wrote this book, now I pay more attention too what I eat everyday and where i eat it from.
Another thought i have on what Schlosser said is on how much criticism he gave all of the fast food restaurants. Many American love fast food and once they read this book, it will cause their income too decline. Fast Food Nation had a lot of law-suites against them because they made so many fast food restaraunts lose money. After reading this book, I know i will still eat fast food but hopefully not as much of it.
